REFRAMING BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER IN THE LIGHT OF CURRENT NEUROBIOLOGICAL FINDINGS AND DEFINING THE ROLE OF SHAME IN TRIGGERING BPD ESCALATIONS
Date: Wednesday, May 16, 2018 Time: 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM PST
Speaker : Valerie Porr, M.A.
BPD affects 5.9% of the general population, has an 8‑10% suicide rate, and worsens the outcome of treatment of co‑occurring disorders. Shame may be the common denominator of BPD reactions to criticism, social disconnection, and rejection. Presentation of data from TARA4BPD’s internet survey, The Experience of Shame, (N=700+) will make visible and visceral how this poorly understood, under researched and neglected emotion is experienced by those with BPD. Techniques for recognizing shame responses and deescalating them will be discussed.
